Okeanidon Apartment in Varkiza
This 65 sq.m. top-floor apartment with its expansive 110 sq.m. veranda is located in the southern suburb of Varkiza, just a breath away from the sea. The apartment, originally built in the 70s, underwent a complete internal and external refurbishment to meet the needs of a family with two children, intending to use it as a summer residence. Given its small size, it was particularly challenging to incorporate all the family’s requirements while maintaining a strong connection between the interior space and the large outdoor veranda, a key element of the design and an area the family would frequently use.
The living areas are designed with an open-plan concept, where elements like bookshelves and open shelving units subtly divide the spaces without creating visual barriers. The large window facing the sea was preserved and integrated into the kitchen area, allowing the element of the sea to be part of the apartment, which otherwise faces a beautiful green square despite being next to the coastal front.
The master bedroom includes a work desk that allows the couple to work remotely and provides isolation from the main living areas when needed. The children’s room is equipped with a bunk bed to accommodate the two young children.
On the veranda, existing fer forge furniture was refurbished and reused, and a large pergola with sail shades was installed, allowing the outdoor space to be used comfortably throughout the day.
The overall aesthetic of the apartment was designed to be clean and fresh, featuring light tones that gain vibrancy from the colours of the sea, sky, and surrounding greenery, as well as select elements in natural oak. The design details heavily incorporate curves, creating a natural flow from one space to another and adding a retro character to the apartment.
