Koukaki Apartment
Located within the dense urban fabric of Koukaki, this 45 sq.m. apartment offered both challenges and potential. The layout includes one bedroom, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, a bathroom, and a generous 25 sq.m. veranda. The design aimed to enhance the sense of space through clarity, natural light, and balanced proportions.
The project involved a thorough renovation, designed to improve circulation, introduce flexibility, and create a stronger connection with the outdoor area. Although compact in size, the apartment now feels airy and inviting.
A very important design strategy was the integration of custom-built elements that not only solve the issue of limited storage but also define the character of the interior. At the center of the living space, a curved kitchen island plays an essential role. It acts as both a divider and a unifier between the kitchen and the living space. Containing the sink, the island functions as a casual eating spot but cam also be easily transformed into a small dining table.
Color was used thoughtfully to distinguish areas: a soft blue defines the kitchen, a muted terracotta tones the bedroom, and a warm off-white finishes the bathroom. Natural oak flooring runs throughout, offering a gentle backdrop, while bold color pops up in lighting and decorative elements.
Respecting the original 1960s character, the renovation breathes new life into the apartment through subtle detailing, natural textures, and a more fluid spatial experience.
